I am looking for a good open source project management software. key is that they system is web-based, can by run behind a firewall. Does not need to be particularly powerful (e.g., resource leveling is optional), but would like something that is proven, popular, and has an active developer base (so that bugs get fixed, etc.)
I have looked at Dotproject (http://www.dotproject.net/) and Double Choco Latte (http://dcl.sourceforge.net/). Any experience with those systems?
I don’t have experience with either of the tools you mention, but I’ve included a link to a list of open source PM tools.
There seems to be many options. Many people recommend Basecamp. I’ve tried it, but it is not the tool we need. I’m sure it’s great, but not for us. It’s more like a communication tool. It doesn’t build Gantt charts. Please advise what other tools are worth looking at.
Come on! MS Project is not Web-based! And it’s one of the worst project management applications I’ve ever used. You might want to take a look at Wrike.com. We started to use it about 4 months ago and it’s doing a great job so far. Our team is placed in 4 different cities and it’s very handy for all of us to keep all the project relevant stuff in one place on the web. Wrike has timelines that stand for Gantt charts. The coolest thing about these timelines is that you can drag-n-drop tasks and dates right on the timeline.
i want to apply for this job but it says you must know web project management…I have no idea what it is…Is it hard to learn? Im a fast learner.
A web project manager normally oversee the entire web project, this can include things like:
Negotiating Contract for the Web Services
Scheduling the Web Project Plan
Arranging all the web projects Wire frames
Negotiaiting Maintenance and Service Level Agreement
Project Functional Specification
Project Privacy and User Agreements
Financial Control, Pay Structures
Arranging the web team
and plenty more
Web Project Managers normally command high salaries, but you normally have to be very experienced and worked in the web industry for a few years. Even if you are a fast learner I doubt they will think your experienced for the role if you have not been in the field a long time.
Also project managers can use a variety of software to schedule the project such as Microsoft Project Management, Excell and many other types of software.
